Tapered Roller Bearings – How They Work
Tapered roller bearings are designed to handle demanding applications while using a relatively simple and highly effective design. They can support both radial and axial (thrust) loads, making them widely used in automotive, industrial, agricultural and heavy machinery applications.
A tapered roller bearing consists of four main components:
Cone (Inner Ring) – The cone fits onto the shaft and contains the inner raceway.
Cup (Outer Ring) – The cup fits inside the housing or hub and forms the outer raceway.
Tapered Rollers – The rolling elements sit between the cone and cup, allowing smooth movement while reducing friction and supporting the applied load.
Cage (Separator) – The cage correctly spaces and holds the tapered rollers in position.
The surfaces of the cone and cup that make contact with the rollers are known as the raceways.
Tapered Roller Bearing Dimensions
When identifying or replacing a tapered roller bearing, there are several important dimensions to consider:
Bore (d) – The inside diameter of the cone. This determines the shaft diameter that the bearing will fit.
Outside Diameter (D) – The outside diameter of the cup. This determines the housing or hub size required.
Cone Width (B) – The overall width of the inner ring or cone.
Cup Width (C) – The width of the outer ring or cup.
Overall Width (T) – The total width of the complete tapered roller bearing when the cone and cup are assembled.
Correct dimensions are essential to ensure that the bearing fits properly onto the shaft and within the housing.
Correct Bearing Installation
Correct alignment is also important when fitting tapered roller bearings. The bearing components should sit squarely against the appropriate shaft and housing shoulders.
The maximum shaft radius (R) ensures that the back face of the cone can sit correctly against the shaft shoulder.
The maximum housing radius (r) ensures that the back face of the cup can sit correctly against the housing shoulder.
Choosing the correct tapered roller bearing dimensions and ensuring proper installation will help provide smooth operation, reliable load support and a long bearing service life.
