Shaftlock Cone Clamping Elements

Cone clamping elements are a purely friction method of clamping components to a shaft. The internal components within a cone clamp operate on a taper, so as the cone clamp is tightened the internal diameter decreases while the outside diameter increases. This change in diameters creates the clamping force.

There are two main advantages of cone clamps. The first is that for machining your component (i.e. a sprocket), the bore needs to be plain rather than being keyed or tapped and tapered. The second advantage is that the cone clamp acts as an overload protector, with excessive loading causing the clamp to spin on the shaft.

These are the original type of shaft clamping elements, proven in a wide range of applications for more than 20 years. Suited to more general applications, this series provides medium torque transmission, which can be increased by mounting the unit in series. This type does not provide self centring, and therefore other methods of centring the hub to the shaft are required. The units do not move axially during clamping and generally self-release when clamping screws are relaxed.

To Install
1 Ensure the hub and shaft surfaces are clean and degreased.
2 Apply a thin coating of light machine oil to screw threads and conical surfaces (do not use any molybdenum disulphide based or E.P. oils).
3 Loosely assemble the clamping element into the required position and tighten the clamping screws in diagonal sequence to the requisite torque, Ts.
4 If the application is subject to corrosive environmental conditions, apply grease to protect screw heads etc.

To Remove
1 Loosen all of the clamping screws in the same diagonal sequence as assembly.
2 The clamping element should now self release.
3 If necessary, tap the screws lightly with a soft hammer.
4 If the clamping element tapers still don't release, remove the lighter coloured screws and replace them with metric screws one size larger.
5 Tighten them sequentially to break the clamping ring cone tapers.
6 Lubricate all screws with a light machine oil for the future use of the Challenge Cone Clamping Element.
